Tuberculosis is a serious infectious disease affecting the population worldwide. One third of mankind, i.e. approximately 1.7 billion people,
is infected with tuberculosis (TB), with some 10 % of them actually developing the disease. Urogenital tuberculosis is the most common
form of extrapulmonary TB. Even though encountered rarely in urological practice, the urogenital form of TB should be considered in the
differential diagnosis in cases when the patient reports long-lasting urological complaints that fail to subside and respond to standard
treatment, particularly in the case of recurrent sterile leukocyturia with a concurrent low urine pH. The symptoms of urinary tract TB
mimic nonspecific urinary tract infections; however, the complaints persist even after repeated antimicrobial treatment. Early diagnosis
is critical for the further course of the disease. The review article presents the epidemiological-microbiological aspects, pathogenesis,
and diagnostic and therapeutic options of this condition.
