Complicated urinary tract infections (UTIs) occur in patients with a structural or functional abnormality in the reproductive or urinary
systems and in immunosuppressed patients. A number of risk factors may indicate the presence of a complicated UTI and may aid the
physician in choosing the examination and treatment. Complicated cases of UTI also have to be taken into account in patients who had
been initially treated for an uncomplicated UTI, but later presented with frequent recurrences (relapse or reinfection) or a persistent
infection. The management of a complicated urinary tract infection must be individual and tailored to the variability of the patient and
the infective microorganism. Elimination of complicating (risk) factors is one of the most important measures to reduce this infection.
