Malnutrition is a long-term process in which the body lacks essential nutrients and substances required for a harmonious physical and
mental development. It is sometimes referred to as an invisible humanitarian disaster. According to WHO statistics, approximately 800
million people suffer from malnutrition worldwide, which accounts for about 20 % of the population of developing countries. In 2000,
almost four million people died due to malnutrition worldwide, 99 % of whom were from developing countries. A study in the Thomayer
Memorial Teaching Hospital revealed that malnutrition occurred in 20–70 % of the hospital‘s clients. As many as 20 % of clients were
malnourished on admission to hospital.
