Urogenitální traumata se řadí většinou k závažným poraněním, která si zhruba v 10 % vyžadují urgentní operační intervenci s nutností dlouhodobé péče o zraněné. Nezřídka se vyskytují i pozdní komplikace ve smyslu abscesů, píštělí, hydronefrózy, litiázy, fibrózy, striktur, pseudodivertiklů, inkontinence, poruch potence a změn v psychice postiženého úrazem. Existuje řada klasifikací poranění urogenitálního systému, které vychází z anatomických či funkčních změn simultánních poranění s jinými orgány či z pozdních následků úrazů. Pro klinika je rozhodující, zda jde o poranění zavřené či otevřené. Za samostatnou skupinu můžeme označit, v dnešní době stále častější, poranění iatrogenní. Pro stanovení diagnózy a správného léčebného postupu je velmi důležitý diagnostický algoritmus urologických traumat.
